1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to the Overlay application distributed through the Mac App Store, which is the sandboxed build of Overlay for macOS.

The Overlay website and the version of Overlay downloaded directly from overlay.top are covered by a separate policy at https://overlay.top/privacy. The two builds behave differently, so the two policies are deliberately kept apart.

2. We Do Not Collect Your Data

The Mac App Store version of Overlay does not collect, transmit, or store any personal information. There is no account to create, no sign-in, and no server of ours for the app to communicate with.

The app makes no network requests to Overlay's own servers. Network traffic originates only from the web pages you choose to open, and from Apple's StoreKit when the app checks whether a purchase applies to your copy.

  • No account, no sign-in, and no user profile
  • No analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs of any kind
  • No device identifier is generated, read, or transmitted
  • No browsing history, page content, or usage statistics leaves your Mac

3. Data That Stays on Your Mac

Overlay stores its working data locally, inside the app's sandbox container at ~/Library/Containers/top.overlay. None of it is uploaded anywhere.

Because this data lives inside the sandbox container, uninstalling Overlay removes it along with the app. You can also delete individual items from within the app at any time.

  • Settings and preferences, including your keyboard shortcuts and appearance choices
  • Your tabs, tab groups, split layouts, and per-display window geometry
  • Browsing history recorded inside Overlay
  • Notes you write in the Notes plugin, including images you paste into them
  • The trial start timestamp, stored as a local preference
  • Files you download, and local diagnostic log files

4. Purchases

Overlay is purchased through Apple. Payment is handled entirely by the App Store using StoreKit.

Overlay never receives, sees, or stores your payment details, name, billing address, or Apple Account information. The app only asks StoreKit whether a purchase entitlement applies to the copy running on your Mac, and that exchange happens between your Mac and Apple.

Billing questions, purchase history, and refunds are handled by Apple through its own support channels.

5. Websites You Open

Overlay is a web workspace, so it can open any website you choose. Those websites are operated by third parties and collect data according to their own privacy policies. Overlay does not inspect, log, or transmit the content of the pages you visit.

Cookies, local storage, and other website data are stored by WebKit inside Overlay's sandbox container on your Mac. Tabs configured with an isolated session use separate storage, which is what allows the same site to stay signed in under different accounts.

When you add a shortcut to the new tab page, Overlay requests that site's icon directly from the site itself. That request goes to the site, not to us.

6. Camera and Microphone

Overlay requests camera and microphone entitlements so that websites you open, such as video conferencing tools, can use them when you allow it.

macOS asks for your permission the first time this happens. Overlay itself does not record, store, or transmit any audio or video. Access is passed through to the web page that requested it, and nothing more.

7. Proxy Settings

Overlay lets you route traffic through a proxy, either globally or for individual tabs. If you configure one, that traffic passes through the server you specified.

We do not operate a proxy service, we do not supply proxy servers, and we have no visibility into traffic routed through one.

8. Notifications

Overlay can present notifications from web pages as native macOS notifications, so you can see them outside the app.

The content of those notifications comes from the web page that generated them and is delivered locally on your Mac. It does not pass through any server of ours.

9. Third Parties

We do not share user data with any third party, because the app does not collect any user data to share. There are no analytics providers, advertising partners, or third-party SDKs embedded in the app.

If this ever changes, we will require any such third party to provide the same or greater protection of user data than this policy describes, and we will update this policy before the change takes effect.

10. Retention, Deletion, and Withdrawing Consent

Because the app collects nothing, we hold no personal data about you on our servers, and there is nothing for us to export or delete on your behalf.

Data created by the app exists only on your Mac. You can remove it at any time by deleting the corresponding items inside the app, or by uninstalling Overlay, which removes its sandbox container.

The one exception is contact you start yourself. If you email support@overlay.top, we keep that message and our reply for up to 24 months so we can follow up on your issue. You can ask us to delete that correspondence at any time by writing to the same address, and we will do so unless we are required by law to retain it.

If you have chosen in macOS to share diagnostics and usage data with developers, Apple may make aggregated crash reports available to us. That data is collected by Apple under Apple's own privacy policy, and what we receive does not identify you.

11. Children

Overlay is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Because Overlay can open any website, it is rated 17+ for unrestricted web access.

12. Who We Are and How to Reach Us

Overlay is published by 【待填写:公司法律主体全称】, registered at 【待填写:注册地址】, which is the data controller for the limited processing described in this policy.

For any privacy question or request, contact support@overlay.top.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. When we make a material change, we will revise the date shown at the top of this page.

Continuing to use Overlay after an update means the revised policy applies going forward.
